Billy is not a good boy, but he has a little mutt he loves, and who loves him. When Billy is sent to Juvenile Hall for stealing, Toby becomes alone and lost. How these two best friends find each other is the story of Billy’s other friends.
Kathy has always wanted a pony of her own. She has to ride rental horses because her Dad is afraid she’ll get hurt. Well, of course she does. She persuades her father to buy her a pony. He buys her an old horse who he thinks is safe. Kathy hates this animal, too old, too lame. How can she come to love this horse?

WHAT SOME READERS SAY

At first I didn’t like Billy and I didn’t want to read this story, but after a few more pages I began to like the other boys enough to keep on reading. Imagine my surprise when at the end I kind of liked Billy too. I think I know why now.
James Conolly

I too never had my own pony but I did love to ride the horse at the stable near my house. Kathy and I have a lot in common, I guess. I watched how Kathy treated her horse, and when that old man came to help I felt like I was there with Kathy. I cried when I finished reading this story because I was so happy for Kathy.
